Grimmjow is a rather rough, belligerent individual. He is typically blunt and disrespectful to anyone, regardless of rank. There is, however, one exception: Grimmjow will use the suffix –sama as a form of respect when speaking to Aizen. However, he immediately drops the politeness once he is out of the presence of the ex-captain. However, he shows minimal respect toward the rest of his supposed comrades. For example, when receiving an order from another Espada, Ulquiorra, who happens to outrank him by two numbers, Grimmjow’s immediate response is “kotowaru ze,” a rather informal form of refusal. (Note: This has been translated as "fuck you" and various other...impolite statements, if that at all helps demonstrate the roughness of the statement.)

Along with this lack of respect, Grimmjow often insults those around him. “Bastard,” “dumbass,” and various varieties are common ways in which he addresses others. He speaks whatever is on his mind, regardless of whether or not it is appropriate to say, which, in most cases it is not. Virtually all of these freely expressed thoughts are somehow insulting, actually, and rarely, if ever, does he express admiration of any kind toward anyone. Instead, he talks down, often colourful strings of profanity and other crude words when addressing others. This behaviour probably stems from his goal of becoming the king. For example, he typically seems smug when sending a one-sided barrage of insults, but he is quick to anger if the situation reverses. Previously smooth, snarky comments will become aggressive yelling if that happens. He has clearly stated that he resents those who look disdainfully upon him, as if they could defeat him. This resentment (according to him) is the reason he is so intent on defeating Ichigo.

Despite these traits, Grimmjow does have some socially acceptable qualities. For example, he possesses (at least to a degree) the sense of honour that is commonly emphasized in shounen manga. He demonstrates this after Orihime regenerates his arm which had been earlier amputated and incinerated. While he chose to later seek her out for more favours, he was quick to defeat two arrancar who had been attacking her before doing so. After a moment of silence, he explains, “That was for my left arm.” However, he quickly offset this by explaining that it was naïve to think that he came there simply to save her. As a result, he maintains his disinterest in the well-being of others while displaying a faint sense of honour.

Still, despite that trait, Grimmjow loves to fight with others. In fact, he has disobeyed orders on multiple occasions for the sake of fighting with and/or killing a worthy enemy. He also seems to initiate battle without much of a reason and encourages others (namely Ichigo) to do the same. A battle to the death against a strong foe excites him so long as he sees a chance of victory. He is reckless and will refuse to admit defeat and will continue to fight until he is utterly incapacitated.
